Competition Law is a law specialisation that candidates are usually offered at the postgraduate level. Under this law specialisation candidates study and review agreements or practices that restrict free trading as well as competition between businesses. Competition Law also bans abusive behaviour by any firm that dominates the market and also includes laws that supervise and negotiate mergers, acquisitions as well as joint ventures.

The main reason why Competition Laws are inculcated in any state/ country is to promote as well as maintain fair competition in markets. Competition Law can be broken into two categories – Antitrust and Merger Control.

Antitrust is further divided into two categories :

1. Anti-Competition is the mainstay of Competition Law and it deals with anti-competition agreements that are made between companies.
2. The second sub-category of Antitrust involves monitoring companies/ firms which hold a dominant position in the market. As part of this law, it is ensured that companies that have a monopoly or hold a big market share do not abuse their position of advantage and therefore laws are made to make this possible.

Merger Control is another aspect of Competition Law that comes into play whenever an acquisition, merger or joint venture is proposed. As part of Merger Control all the aspects are examined in detail to ensure that the firm does not dominate the market and does not stop potential competition.
