What is Marine Engineering?

Marine engineering is a branch of engineering that deals with the construction as well as the operation of mechanical equipment of seagoing craft, docks, and harbor installations. The basic job of a Marine engineer is to design, build and maintain vehicles/structures used on or around water. This includes ships, aircraft carriers, submarines, sailboats, tankers etc.

Marine engineers are accountable for the ship's internal system which comprises the propulsion, electrical, refrigeration and steering systems.

Few of the specialties required in Marine engineering are:

Computer Science

Naval architect

Electrical engineering

Oceanographic engineering

Electronic engineering

Offshore engineering

Mechanical engineering

Required Skill Set for Marine Engineering

Marine engineering is meant for candidates who see their themselves conducting research work in oceans or coastal waters in the future. To be a successful marine engineer, students should display the given below skill set:

Good communication skills

Strong problem-solving skills

Computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) skills

Team management

Excellent at mathematics/Mathematical skills

Time management skills

Excellent IT skills and technical knowledge

Efficient planner

Proven negotiating skills

Budget management skills

Marine Engineering: Eligibility Criteria

Undergraduate (UG) : At the UG level, candidates must have successfully passed their senior secondary examination or its equivalent with at-least 60% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM). They should also have secured a minimum 50% marks in English either in Class X or Class XII. A minimum and a maximum age limit may or may not be a requirement by some marine engineering institutes.

Some institutes might also have a minimum and a maximum age limit. Some institutes might examine candidate's medical fitness which includes some features that need to be particularly observed like constitution, skeletal system, ear nose throat, speech, lymphatic system, cardiovascular system, respiratory system digestive system, genitourinary system, skin, nervous system, eyesight and other tests.

Postgraduate (PG) :Aspirants must have passed their 10+2 examination from a recognised school. Candidates must have completed their graduation with BE/BTech in Mechanical/Marine engineering from a recognized university and should have secured an aggregate marks of 50% to 60% in their bachelor studies.

Top Entrance Exams for Marine Engineering

Admissions to Marine engineering programmes at the UG and as well PG level is based on entrance exams. However, admissions to some institutes may also be based on merit.

The selection process might vary from college to college. But typically, the selection process for admissions to Marine engineering courses involves two steps:

  • Admissions solely based on the aspirant’s entrance exam or/and
  • Releasing merit list based on candidate’s performance in entrance exam and their qualifying exam

This is followed by GD (Group discussion),  PI (Personal Interview), psychometric test or medical examination depending on the institute one is applying for. Some colleges also offer admissions via direct entry.

Some of the popular marine engineering exams are:

UG level:

IMUCET

JEE Main

JEE Advanced

TMISAT

HIMT Entrance exam

Generally, the syllabus for the above given exams include Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Logical Reasoning and English.

PG level:

GATE is one of the most popular entrance exams for admissions to marine engineering programmes at the PG level. Even though there is no separate paper for ME in GATE, interested applicants can opt for GATE papers like Electrical Sciences or Mechanical engineering.

All the papers in GATE will have a total of 65 questions carrying 100 marks. Out of which 10 questions carrying a total of 15 marks are in General Aptitude (GA). The paper comprises Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) carrying 1 or 2 marks each as well as Numerical Answer Questions of 1 or 2 marks each in all papers and sections.

Marine Engineering Job Profiles

According to reports, the employment of marine engineers and naval architects is expected to grow 12% from the year 2016 to 2026, faster than the average for all occupations. Marine engineers are land jobs in Shipping firms, Indian Navy, Shipyards, Engine manufacturing companies, Ship building firms, Ship design firms, Maritime universities, Research Institutions etc.

Take a look at some of the types of job profiles marine engineers can expect to bag after completing the course.

Job Profile

Role

Chief Engineer

A chief engineer holds a high rank in the Marines. They head the entire marine engineering department on the vessel and are responsible for the maintenance and operation of all engineering equipment onboard the vessel.

Chief Electric Tech Officer

Chief Electric Tech Officer head the Electrical department of the ship.

Design Engineer

Design engineers design and experiment new technology and machine parts for a ship.

Navy Personnel

Students, after clearing the Defence Services Exams, can join the Indian Coast Guard and the Indian Navy and guard the country’s waters.

Maintenance Engineer

I will try to solve your query to extend possible. Normal speaking every college these days has their website updated and quite informative as to the eligibility for getting admission in that Institute. In view of this I would advise you to download the brochure from the website of your intended college to know the details of eligibility for admission including clearing any examination that the college may prescribe. Best wishes to you.
