Whether sick or healthy, nursing involves the autonomous and collaborative care of individuals of all ages, families, groups, and communities and the care of patients in all settings. It entails promoting health, avoiding sickness, and caring for the sick, the disabled, and those nearing the end of their lives. Nurses play a crucial role in health care and are frequently the unsung heroes in hospitals, emergency response situations, and the community. As first responders to health emergencies, they are commonly called upon to operate on the front lines of disease prevention and the delivery of primary health care services, including promotion, prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation.

Nurses account for more than half of all healthcare workers in many countries, and they play an essential role in how health interventions are planned and implemented, both at the front-line and the managerial levels. They are frequently the first and, in some cases, the only health professional a patient will see. The quality of their first evaluation and ongoing treatment is critical to achieving positive health outcomes for the patient.

On the other hand, in the field of health sciences and health professions, midwifery is concerned with the care of women throughout their pregnancies, childbirths, and postpartum periods (including the care of newborns) and the sexual and reproductive health of women throughout their lives. Midwifery is considered a medical profession in several nations (unique for its independent and direct specialized education; should not be confused with the medical speciality, which depends on a previous general training). A midwife is a person who works in the field of midwifery.

Types of Nursing & Midwifery Courses

There are two types of Nursing and midwifery courses available at the diploma level in the country. These two diploma level courses can be pursued after class 12. The two Nursing & Midwifery courses are ANM (Auxiliary Nursing Midwifery) and GNM (General Nursing Midwifery).

ANM: ANM full-time is a two-year diploma programme. It is mainly concerned with the healthcare industry. Knowledge on how to set up an operation theatre, care for various pieces of equipment, keep accurate records, and provide medication to patients on time are all covered in this course.

Candidates who wish to pursue ANM courses must get a minimum of 50 per cent aggregate marks in their class 12 examinations to be considered for admission. In addition, they must be under the age of 18 to be eligible.

GNM: GNM Nursing is a diploma-level course that takes three years and six months to complete. The GNM curriculum is comprised of three years of formal study and a six-month internship requirement. The specifics of the General Nursing and Midwifery course are geared at imparting skills and knowledge related to patient care and clinical treatment.

This course is only open to students who have completed Class 12 and can enrol for the programme. Students who have studied biology in the 11th and 12th grades are given special consideration. The admission procedure for GNM Nursing is handled by a variety of state-level entrance tests, such as the West Bengal GNM, Kerala GNM, and Maharashtra GNM. The only way to obtain a GNM Nursing Qualification is to pass the entrance tests and admission to the appropriate college.

About ANM

ANM, or Auxiliary Nursing Midwifery, is generally a diploma programme that focuses on studying human health and the care of pregnant women. In addition, applicants learn about the Operation Theatre, its operation, the numerous equipment used in it, and how to use it while taking this course. The ANM programme's primary goal is that the candidates learn how to operate as primary health workers in the community and provide care to children, mothers, and the elderly.

ANM covers a wide range of topics, including Child Health Nursing, Health Promotion, Midwifery, Health Care Management, Primary and Community Health Nursing, and many more. An aspirant who wants to follow this degree must have patience, be vigilant, be physically fit, and take responsibility. ANMs have a promising future in the field, with numerous work prospects in a variety of settings, including NGOs, government hospitals, nursing homes, and private hospitals, among others.

What is GNM?

The role of GNM graduates can be that of primary healthcare providers for women, and they are most typically responsible for the medical treatment of generally healthy women whose health and deliveries are deemed to be straightforward rather than high risk, as well as their neonates. The benefits of midwifery care from a nurse-midwife in cooperation with a physician are often available to women experiencing high-risk pregnancies. Obstetrician and gynaecologist consultation and support are provided to individuals who have issues during pregnancy or complicated medical histories or conditions (s). The fact that they visit women for routine checks and can administer all forms of contraception means that they provide health care for sexual health.
