All About Dental Course
Following completing Class 12 in the Science stream with PCB topics (Physics, Chemistry and Biology), students typically choose degrees like Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) following Class 12. The dental course consists mostly of four years of academic instruction and one year of clinical experience, during which students receive practical training at health clinics under the supervision of senior Medical practitioners. After earning a Dental degree, candidates have the option of pursuing higher degrees to further specialise in this discipline, or they can pursue short-term certification courses in related specialisations and obtain a licence from the Dental Council of India to practise as a certified dentist.
Why Study Dental Course?
The number of Dental patients in the country has increased as a result of improved oral hygiene education. To treat these patients, one must have a BDS degree, as Dentistry is only practised in India after finishing a BDS. It is believed that career chances will improve in the near future. This is because the number of dental patients and doctors is quickly increasing, and the government seeks to improve career options for dentists by extending work opportunities.

Q. What are the prerequisites for dental diploma and certificate programmes?
A. Aside from undergraduate and postgraduate studies in dentistry, several universities and institutions offer candidates short-term diploma and certificate courses. These courses specialise in specialised dentistry abilities and assist dentists in furthering their careers by learning more skills and practising in many disciplines of dentistry. Students must have a 10+2 diploma with biology as the core subject in order to enrol in an undergraduate-level diploma or certificate programme. A bachelor's degree in dentistry is required for postgraduate diploma or certificate programmes.
Q. Why is BDS superior to MBBS?
A. The primary distinction between the BDS and MBBS programmes is the cost of education. People from all socioeconomic levels can more easily enrol in the BDS programme because it is far less expensive than the MBBS programme. A BDS degree is affordable and ensures a successful career. Furthermore, owing to the high level of competition, obtaining a seat on merit for the MBBS course is quite tough.
A graduate degree in either the MBBS or BDS programme opens the door to a lucrative career. The main distinction between the two medical science programmes is that MBBS doctors begin earning much later than dentists. Admission to MBBS programmes is tougher due to the high cutoff range and few places.
Q. What is the career scope of BDS programme?
A. After finishing the BDS programme, students can pursue jobs in a variety of dental fields, including dentist, researcher, and lecturer. Dental Officer in the Indian Defence Services (Army, Navy, and Air Force), Dentist in the Indian Railways, Territorial army officer, and so on. In India, the scope and salary of BDS are enormous, with noteworthy remuneration packages for graduates. Furthermore, dentistry and dental science are in high demand on a global basis. As a result, after earning a bachelor's degree in dental science, the salary is competitive. Graduates in India can earn a BDS income of around INR 3.05 LPA on average.
Q. Can I use the title 'Dr' after completing my Dental degree?
A. Yes, dentists in India with a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree are legally permitted to use the term "Doctor" or "Dr." before their names. This is due to the DMD and DDS degrees being seen as similar to medical degrees such as the Doctor of Medicine (MD).
It is crucial to note, however, that the usage of the title "Dr." is governed by the Dental Council of India (DCI), India's governing organisation for dental education and practice. The DCI has precise norms and restrictions for dental professionals' usage of titles.

- Passionate about providing care to those in need
- Caring and concerned about how the patient feels during procedures

Q. Which Dental course is best?
A. The only professional Dental programme that is frequently chosen in India is BDS. Cadidates who are interested in becoming Dentists at either private or public hospitals must complete it.
The only recognised professional Dental course in India is the 5-year undergraduate BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) programme. Following the BDS programme, students graduate as doctors. Students who want to become dentists at public or private hospitals must take this course. The primary objectives of the BDS are to educate and familiarise students with the Dental Sciences and procedures. 4 years of classroom instruction and 1 year of required rotational internship make up the 5-year programme.
Q. Is the Dental course hard?
A. Dental school can be nearly as challenging as Medical school. The considerable amount of studying required of dental school students causes many of them to suffer. It contains a wealth of Dental knowledge that must be applied in practice in addition to being memorised.
The fact that Dental school students start using Dental procedures practically far earlier than their Medical school colleagues is a significant distinction between Dental school and Medical school.
Within the first two years of dental school, practical courses are utilised. This may increase the stress that students already experience as a result of their demanding academic schedules and challenging exams.
Q. What is the course list of the Dental course?
A. The popular specialisations that candidates can pursue are as follows:
- Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
- Endodontic
- Dento-maxillofacial Radiology
- Orthodontic
- Paediatric Dentistry
- Prosthodontics

- Forensic Odontology
- Oral Pathology
- Oral Surgery
Q. Which is better - Dental or Veterinary?
A. It fully relies on the candidate who wishes to pursue a career in either Veterinary Science or Dental Science.
While BDS, or Bachelor of Dental Sciences, is a 5-year undergraduate degree in the field of Dental Science that aids students in entering the field, BVSc, or Bachelor of Veterinary Science, is a 5-year undergraduate degree that primarily aims to educate candidates about the nutrition, breeding, and treatment of animals.
Both programmes offer promising futures, a solid reputation, good average pay, and internship opportunities for course-related practical experience.
