What is Graphics Art?
Graphic Arts is a branch of visual art which makes use of typography, photography and illustration. It is considered as a mode of visual communication through symbols, signs and images, which is widely used in print, layouts, logo and symbol designing, environmental designing, and product packaging. Graphic arts is also used for web designing, creating web documents and videos. Graphic artists usually work with web designers. Hence, Graphic Arts is often termed as ‘applied art’.
The graphic artists use 2D and 3D geometrical shapes to create a design. To gain expertise in this branch of art, students have to undertake formal training and complete professional courses in order to pursue a career in graphic arts. In India, there are several institutes which conduct undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Graphic Arts. Interested students who wish to take up a course in graphics arts, has to meet the eligibility criteria, which is as follows.
Eligibility Criteria to pursue Graphic Arts
Graphic Arts is a vocational course which lays emphasis on theoretical knowledge along with hands-on training. Candidates are given opportunities to join internship programmes to hone their skills. So to acquire expertise in graphic arts, candidates are required to pursue an undergraduate programme. Those who aspire to acquire advanced knowledge and expertise on the subject, may further pursue a postgraduate programme. However, to pursue an undergraduate programme in any institute, candidates must have passed 10+2 board examination with 50% marks (45% marks for reserved category candidates) in aggregate. Some institutes conduct entrance test followed by an interview to select candidates. Again, some institutes admit students on the basis of their results in Class XII Board examination. To join a postgraduate programme, candidates must have completed 4 years’ graduation programme to be eligible.
Skills required to learn Graphic Arts
The first and foremost quality of a graphic designer is creativity. The student must possess a creative frame of mind to innovate new ideas and pattern. Besides, they also must possess good communication skills and knowledge of various design softwares on the computer. In the table below, Shiksha lists down the skills required to learn Graphic Arts:

Admission Procedure and Fee Â
To secure admission in the undergraduate programme in Graphic Arts, the candidates must apply online. The institutes which conduct entrance test start their admission procedure prior to the publication of board examination result. The candidates will have to apply and appear for the entrance examination. The institutes which accept students on the basis of the entrance tests are:
However, these are national level entrance tests. On the other hand, the institutes which accept students on the basis of their board Examination result start the admission procedure after the publication of Board results. The candidates are required to fill up the application form for this purpose.Â
Graphic Arts Course Structure and Curriculum
The 4 years’ undergraduate programme in Graphic Arts is divided into 8 semesters. The syllabus is prepared accordingly. The students acquire theoretical knowledge along with practical training in each semester. They are given ample opportunities to join practical classes. Job and Career Scope in Graphic Arts
There are a plethora of job opportunities available for graphic artists/ designers. The world of web interface is expanding rapidly and hence the demand for graphic designers is always high in the industry. Moreover, the world of advertising, campaigning have exclusively become digital and these agencies always require graphic artists to cater their demands.Â
Besides, graphic designers can take up government jobs as well. Sectors like Banking, Railway and Defence Service appoint graphic artists to design the logos, advertisements and campaigns. The web designers, however, design the websites of these sectors. The salary of graphic artists may range from Rs. 3lakhs-8 lakhs. Their remuneration increases with experience.
