The author has given the indication of overall purpose in the first three paragraphs only. Passage mostly talks about the alternatives efficient to avoid congestion due to rise in car use. Option D can be one of the motives but doesn't constitute complete purpose.

This clearly express, how new journalism is threatening the question of truth and it's explained further in the next paragraph.

'Trajectory' shows how under the action of given forces the object behaves or moves. Here, the author has compared the unlock situation as one of the forces that are acting on people behaving as objects and their shift from public transport to private vehicles. Hence, option A clearly defines the purpose of usage of this word.
