I guess, you are referring to either PGDBA or PGDM. For PGDBA, IIM-C conducts a separate entrance test and PGDM candidates are selected though CAT.

There is no area wise preference in any of IIM becaause selection in IiM is purely based on merit.

Work experience is not a mandatory requirement for PGDM in IIMs. Candidates with work experience are preferred over freshers by some IIMs.

Yes, it is very important to have past academics, not only for IIMs for PGDM program, but for any good b-school. If good b-school is overlooking the same, then it will not be beneficial for you.
