SMIT requires applicants to have obtained at least 55% of the possible points in their final recently qualifying exam in the relevant field to get to be admitted. Still, for B.Tech programs, the candidate's performance in the SMIT entrance exam or other recognized entrance examinations, for example the JEE/MET/SMIT Online Test, and for M.Tech programs, the candidate's performance in the SMET test or a valid GATE score, determines the admission process.

SMIT is one of the best colleges and also have the best infrastructure, better than most of the college in Sikkim. It has a huge vicinity and an amazing sports facility. Excellent infrastructure, well-experienced faculty & one of the best learning environments in India. There are 95% placements for all those who wish to sit for it (despite there being many who quit the placement rounds at the last moment to opt for better opportunities [read: off campus]). However, there is a downside to it: Mechanical and Civil departments barely have any good on-campus placements in core companies due to the relatively low sizes of the departments and the fact that, yes we are stuck on a mountain. The faculty at SMIT, like any other college, is a mixed bag. You’ve got some great faculty members from the likes of IIT, NITs and even IISC, some others who are great at teaching and open to deliberation on topics and then you also have some who are quite simply put, pathetic. And if the person hasn’t been transferred to MUJ yet, you’ll most likely get profs from the first two categories!
