As per me, you should appear for individual state examinations (OJEE in Odisha, EAMCET in Andhra Pradesh/Telangana, ComedK in Karnataka etc.). These exams also guarantee you good colleges and serve as a backup.
More the entrance examinations you appear for, the more the options you will have for choosing colleges.

I can understand your angst. Unfortunately, presently it's only in medical and dental, a single all India test has been mandated called NEET. This happened in spite of spirited opposition by private colleges / Deemed Universities and some states as well. But, luckily for all aspirants and their parent's tensions and pain of appearing for large number of entrance exams is now a thing of past. Let's hope this happens for engineering admissions too.
