No, it is not mandatory, but it's recommended. The clubs make up a huge chunk of a student's “college experience.” They aren't just about events, rather they're where you meet people outside your course and learn random but useful skills.
Besides, there is an array of clubs to choose from with something for everyone. From journalism, law, marketing, HR, finance to dance, design, sports, movies and books.
