It depends on the Community and availability of the department you want to choose. Mostly, if you belong to General Community, it is better to lose hope, because it is extremely rare to get into NIT with that rank.

Admission in NIT depends on rank not on marks. Tell me your category rank, home state rank. Board marks are just for eligibility, not for admission.

There is not much relation in between the syllabus of class 11th- class 12th with engineering. But all the basics in 1st year is from class 11th- class 12th. After first year, it is total different pattern. For your interest, if you love physics then choose electrical. If your interest is in Maths and chemistry, then go for mechanical. If you want to start your career as a programmer, then choose CS/IT.

In the first year of engineering, the subjects are not related to any particular branch or department, but are more like general engineering. These subjects are to be known by every engineer, irrespective of their branch. They include Basic Electronics, Basic Electrical, Programming with C/C+, Basic Mechanical, Engineering Mechanics, Engineering Drawing and Engineering Mathematics to name a few. Depending on the college/university, there might be subtle changes to the list; but broadly, the first year is meant to be formative period, to make students ready for next 3 years. Hope that helps.
good luck.

Well, according to me, the list should be something like this:
NIT-Trichy
NIT-Surathkal
NIT-Warangal
MNNIT-Allahabad
MNIT-Jaipur /NIT-Calicut
SVNIT-Surat / NIT-Nagpur
MANIT-Bhopal / NIT-Kurukshetra / NIT-Rourkela
NIT-Durgapur / NIT-Jamshedpur
NIT-Jalandhar (Estd. 1987)/ NIT-Delhi ( Estd. 2010)
NIT-Raipur/ NIT-Hamirpur (Estd 1986)
These are the NITs which were RECs / RITs (Regional engineering College/ Regional Institute of Technology) before. And were established in early 1960s (unless otherwise mentioned). They have better alumni base and infrastructure as compared to newer ones. I have kept NIT Delhi here in this list because of its closing ran
