There is no one single factor apparently. Besides meeting the general admission requirements like submission of TOEFL scores, essays, etc. you must demonstrate a high caliber profile. Columbia university is not easy to crack, you must display an all-rounded profile like excellent academic grades, very good communication skills, internship, project work related to journalism, voluntary work, achievements etc. Basically, you must convince the university why you want to pursue journalism and why they should admit you.
