To apply for B.F.Sc. at College of Fisheries, Mangalore, candidates should have passed the second year PUC of Karnataka Pre-University Board or its equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology as elective subjects. They should be at least 17 years old as of December 31st of the admission year. Filled-in application forms are to be submitted to the Registrar, KVAFSU, in the prescribed form on or before the specified date and time. Admission is based on merit, determined by the percentage of marks obtained in the qualifying examination.

The selection process for the BFSc course at the College of Fisheries Mangalore is different for the students from reserved & unreserved categories, and candidates belong to the Agriculturist quota (seats reserved for Agriculturists/ children of Agriculturists). To get a seat under the reserved & unreserved quota, the college accepts the score of the last qualifying examinations, and releases the merit on the basis of that. Followed by a counselling process. To get a seat in the Agriculturist quota, candidates must have gone through a practical test for 200 marks, i.e., conducted by the university. Moreover, the merit list shall be prepared on the basis of 50% of the marks secured in PCMB 50% of the marks secured in the practical test conducted by the university.
