First, think about how much you have to score in your JEE exam and prepare accordingly. It is very simple, you are preparing for class 12th exams so prepare well and your class 12th syllabus contributes a big part of JEE exam. I would suggest you to start your preparation from the 2nd year, but you should write it in either 3rd or 4th year because GATE and other exams cover the course of mainly 2nd and 3rd year.
If you are applying for fall, you should take latest by July or even before that, so that after writing it once you can think about a second chance, if not happy with your score, otherwise you start building up your SOP and search for the right place to go.
