Yes, dentists in India with a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree are legally permitted to use the term "Doctor" or "Dr." before their names. This is due to the DMD and DDS degrees being seen as similar to medical degrees such as the Doctor of Medicine (MD).
It is crucial to note, however, that the usage of the title "Dr." is governed by the Dental Council of India (DCI), India's governing organisation for dental education and practice. The DCI has precise norms and restrictions for dental professionals' usage of titles.
