Your ranking at 21K is actually very good and with this you are bound to get admission in a good engineering college. You can help yourself by downloading the college predictor of the entrance exam in which you got this ranking. It will tell you about possible branch and the college that you can get. Just do not worry. I can understand your angst and the anxiety. Frankly speaking if you want to become a scientist then there is no need to do engineering. You should go for BCA MCA and then Ph.D. You will then be able to become scientist. Best wishes to you.

These days, perhaps in Tamil Nadu, marks of 12th are utilised only to determine yes or no meaning minimum marks must be obtained in 12th below which a student can not seek admission in engineering. However actual admission is based on ranking in the entrance exam conducted by the states. Best wishes to you.
