JEE is one of the options for doing engineering and not the only option.
If you are interested in engineering, then you may appear for other popular exams like BITSAT, VITEEE, etc.
Other than engineering, the following are the top options to opt for:
1) You can opt for B.Sc in physics /chemistry / maths based on your interests.
2) BBA leads you in the field of management.
3) B.Arch for architecture.
4) Commerce related courses like B.Com, CA, CS, etc.
5) BA English / mass communication / journalism / hotel management and other such courses in the field of arts and humanities.

Dropping a year to clear JEE demands conviction and dedication. To enhance your performance, I would suggest you to have good coaching as it would help you a lot.
If you decide to do self-study then the following books will help you:
1) NCERT: For getting a clear conceptual knowledge 9of PCM.
2) Physics: Concept of physics by H.C. Verma volume 1&2.
3) Maths-Arihant series and TMH Tata Mcgraw Hill books
4) Chemistry-P. Bahadur and O.P. Tandon
5) You may also solve as many questions as possible before the exam. The previous years questions will be of immense help to you.

The smart preparation is preparing in a way that gives you equal knowledge in PCM by spending an equal amount of time for each.
It is possible by allotting a time table which should be in such a way that you can manage your HSC as well as JEE Mains preparations.
Practice is really important when it comes to competitive exams. So, you need to practice as many problems as you can. Refer to the good books which may give you sufficient knowledge.
For concepts in PCM, NCERT would be ideal.

There are specific cut-off marks category wise, which is necessary to clear JEE. It varies every year. But generally, to get admission into the top NITs, you need to score at least 300+ (for general category).
However, the ranks depending on the number of candidates appearing for the exam.
This year cut off marks (JEE 2017) are:
1) General (OC) - 81
2) SC-32
3) ST-27
4) OBC-NCL-49
5) PWD- 1
