Begin with History book from British literature, some options are David Daiches, Edward Albert, W H Hudson. Collect maximum information about important author/critic & their work. Practice previous year papers & UGC NET Online Mock test for English. For Literary Criticism & theory must refer Peter Berry, MAR Habib and history of literary criticism. Be thorough with M H Abrams Glossary of literary Terms. Cover major writings from American literature, Indian English writing & Postcolonial literature & theories of cultural studies. Read literary awards like booker prize, pultizer prize, noble prize & updations. Do not ignore paper 1 at any cost. Thanks a lot.

When it is about UGC NET exam, be clear about your efforts as it is being conducted on National level. Never take paper 1 for granted it carries 100 marks. As far as study plan is concerned must devote 5-6 hours a day, that too religiously. Know your syllabus well and go for the best study materials. Stick to the syllabus only, UGC NET English has a very vast syllabus. Along with this start with the topics you know well so that you can complete them in short time and it will boost your confidence as well. UGC NET at least require 6 months. Do not invest all the time on a single topic, manage your time well. Divide the syllabus (paper 2) in 4 sections

Go with the basic books that ensure to cover the syllabus. For British literature must follow David Daiches (both volumes) & Routledge's History. For Indian literature must go with M K Naik & K R Srinivasa Iyengar. For literary theory go for A RHabib & M H Abrams. Hope it helps.
