Occupational therapy involves serving people with physical or mental disabilities so that they can attain reasonable level of functioning and independence in all aspects of their daily routines. Occupational therapy is not an isolated function. It is performed in routine life activities of work, play and leisure. Professionals in this career handle cases of people with mental, emotional, physical disabling conditions. Their prime function is to identify the problem and helping out the people in maintaining a balance in their lives, using various methods. Occupational therapy includes various educational, recreational and creative activities. The process also involves detailed knowledge of suffering Patient's background, his particular interests etc.
There is a high demand of Occupational therapists all over the India and world in general. Therapists are more needed for people suffering from work related injuries, lower back problems, schizophrenia, Alzheimer's and post-traumatic stress, learning problems etc. There are several job opportunities in hospitals, polyclinics, rehabilitation centers, psychiatric institutions, special schools, community mental health centers, residential care facilities, adult daycare programs, sports teams etc.
A research or a masters programme will be an added advantage depending on your interest area.
