Yes, at the very least, a working knowledge of botany and plant sciences is required to work in Pharmacognosy. Pharmacognosy includes identifying medicinal plants, examining their morphology, knowing their morphological characteristics, and appreciating their chemical constituents. This knowledge will guide you in sourcing, classifying, and validating drugs from nature (plants in particular) into crude drugs. In this regard, it helps to have knowledge of plant taxonomy and botany in general.

Pharmacognosy is both traditional, like Ayurveda, and it also has modern pharmaceutical applications. Pharmacognosy looks at the roles natural substances play in medicine not limited by the medical system using them.
Modern Pharmacognosy also incorporates biotechnology, molecular screening and standardization processes to validate both the safety and efficacy of herbal drugs for use in mainstream health care.

Pharmacognosy focuses on natural drug sources (mostly plants) and their medicinal properties, emphasizing the extraction and identification of bioactive molecules. However, Pharmacology is the study of drug effects on the body, and then Pharmaceutical Chemistry is the chemistry of turned into drugs, or the making of drugs and drug formulation. Consequently, Pharmacognosy connects nature to drug discovery, which makes it distinctive.
