Pharmacognosy is one of most important components of BPharmacy and is not generally offered as a separate UG specialization. It is usually taught in one of second or third semester of B. Pharmacy.

At postgraduate level, students will be able to specialize in Pharmacognosy through M Pharm (Pharmacognosy) or related research programs, focused on developing natural drugs and phytochemistry.

Pharmacognosy is both traditional, like Ayurveda, and it also has modern pharmaceutical applications. Pharmacognosy looks at roles natural substances play in medicine not limited by medical system using them.

Modern Pharmacognosy also incorporates biotechnology, molecular screening and standardization processes to validate both safety and efficacy of herbal drugs for use in mainstream health care.

Pharmacognosy focuses on natural drug sources (mostly plants) and their medicinal properties, emphasizing the extraction and identification of bioactive molecules. However, Pharmacology is the study of drug effects on the body, and then Pharmaceutical Chemistry is the chemistry of turned into drugs, or the making of drugs and drug formulation. Consequently, Pharmacognosy connects nature to drug discovery, which makes it distinctive.
