Yes, softwares are involved as once a booking is done the same needs to be updated with all concerned departments immediately to avoid confusion hence a software is required.
List of software involved in ticketing/reservations are:
-Galileo CRS
-Amadeus
-Sabre
-Worlspan, etc.
The various version of these software keep developing based on the company and any additional features that are introduced.
The best training institutes for these software would definitely be the IATA authorized centers as these certification from there are globally accepted.

Ticketing job is a general term used for executives working on ticket distribution and ticket selling. They not only sell the ticket over the counter, but they also sell offline thorough connections/ social platforms.
Reservation executives are the ones who are generally working in backend office work. They just confirm the tickets booked by people for the seats of transportation/ events/ any other occasion. They just forward their work to ticketing team.
Reservation team is a comfortable job as compare to ticketing. Ticketing team needs to meet the targets assigned. Ticketing job is a bit tedious as compared to the reservation.

You can work in booking and confirm reservations for passengers on scheduling flights, helping the customers in chalking out their travel schedule and so on. Profession one has to deal with people who are from any part of the world and desiring to get to any other part of the world. So one has to be ready to serve people from all over the globe. There may be people from Kazakhstan who want an air ticket to Melbourne. And such people will come by across in hundreds and those who are doing the air ticketing have to search and arrange air tickets for all these passengers. Air Ticketing- this is the actual purchase/issuing of a ticket for a mode of travel. A lot of airlines have their offshore ticketing offices, where immediate purchases can be made by passengers.
These counters are also available at the airport and such jobs are offered directly through the respective airlines as ground staff. Ticketing would also require knowledge of certain software for the process.
So, both have similar career prospects depending on the path you choose.
