Of all the IIT's, Mumbai is colloquially considered at pole position. Hence you need to be with almost 95 percentile or more to get a seat in IIT-M in your desired stream.
Regular study of all subjects’ every day and mock tests every week with analysis of result enabling less and less errors should be followed. Try to take crash course of coaching institutes. They normally teach you shortcuts cuts in answering questions.

He should focus on basics and practice more and more.
Before clearing an entrance exam all the branches have same criteria.
It may vary college to college due to their facility and infrastructure.
If he wants to join ece just tell him to focus on practice and fallow what teacher is saying in his classes.
That will be sufficient no need to worry.
In case if will not get ece he can change his branch to ece after end of first semester.
Because first year in engineering have common subjects.
Here is a link of exams. I hope it will help you.
Thank you.

#NITian,

You'll have to score more than 75% in your 12th . And also you will have to clear JEE Mains. These two things will make you eligible to sit in the JEE advance exam. Once you clear JEE advance you can apply for counselling and you will get one of the college as per your rank.
Good luck.
