If you have studied well for UP board exams then you may try for JEE this year itself. UP board is tough as compared to CBSE and you still have time for the exam. You can prepare well. Also, if you are not able to crack JEE and don’t get a good engineering college then you can drop a year. But remember that your target are IITs but if you are getting admission in a reputed institute like DTU, BITS Pilani or NITs then also do not take a drop, rather take admission in those colleges as they also offer good placements.

Its very Good you want yo go for IIT but for getting seat there is tuff.
You can start your GATE preparation from starting you last year or you can drop one year also if you are keen determined about getting admission in IIT. you have to get good marks in both B.tech and GATE for this.

You can do all the preparation for the exam from RS Aggarwal. They have published many books like quantitative Aptitude and Ability of R. S Agarwal. R. S Agrawal also covers topic for reasoning - verbal and non- verbal aptitude. For English, go for Arihant and S. hand. Study the book thoroughly. For G. k and business affairs, read newspapers and magazines.
