Nowadays, the same problem occurs to many students. The fact is it is not easy to get government jobs nowadays. You can prepare for government job but do not sit ideal just thinking that you will get government job. I would recommend you to go for M.Tech side by side. As your year will not be waste and you will prepare yourself for government job and aloo for M.Tech. While applying for M.Tech make sure you will get admission in IIT or NIT or some top private institute. It will be waste of M.Tech if you go for low level colleges.
First, you should get your hands on previous years papers of the college entrance exams. Try and answer them it will give you an idea as to what line of questioning the exam takes.

You can keep practicing on reading comprehension because Verbal Ability is important and it needs continuous practice, it’s not a few days practice like Quantitative Ability. If you are working in a private bank after completing B.Tech in mechanical engineering, then you must opt for MBA. Moreover, if you want to change your field, then you must prepare for GATE exam.
I doubt it because the minimum percentage should be above 50 to 60+ % for CAT, you can appear for MAT exam and pursue MBA though.
