Yes, you can opt for computer science engineering after 12th and look for a career as a software engineer. After 12th, you must give a hard try to get into IITs/NITs. CSE from IITs and NITs will be a good strive forward to become a software engineer.

You should know yourself what you want to do. Nothing is good or bad.
Look for some counselors if you don't know the answer and let them determine your aptitude. Mostly they charge hefty so look for free counseling online or you may visit counseling center of premier universities like LPU in your nearest city. they will counsel you for free.
