St. Xavier's College aims in providing outstanding education with the principles of moral values for bringing out their aesthetic and social potentials. The college is managed by the Gujarat Province of Society of Jesus and is affiliated to Gujarat University. The institute gives preference for socially discriminated group of students treating all humans equal as the children of God. The college started functioning from 1955 onwards because of the dedicated efforts of Fr Gomes who raised funds for the construction of this institute.

The courses are offered in both English medium and Gujarati medium.
In addition to the above, it offers career oriented course in Arts, counseling, English language, Journalism and Rural development. Also, courses in Nutrition and dietetics, Landscaping and gardening, Bioinformatics, Computer hardware, and Microprocessor Photonics are available here.
Services:
The college has hostels for both boys and girls which accommodates 170 boys and 140 girls. Each room is shared by three students.
The central library has an overwhelming collection of 69,000 volumes of books apart from journals and periodicals. In addition to the main library each department has separate library consisting of volumes of books of particular discipline of study. The entire library is digitalized and is operated by SOUL software. The central library is linked to each department so that the students can access books from any of the terminals inside the college. It has special software for facilitating reading for the visually challenged students.
