I would suggest you to appear for IIT JEE and AIEEE. These two entrance examinations provide admissions to IITs/ NITs and other government colleges, which are cost-effective.
I would also suggest you to appear for individual state examinations (OJEE in Odisha, EAMCET in Andhra Pradesh/Telangana, COMEDK in Karnataka, etc.). These exams also guarantee you good colleges and serve as a backup in case things don't end up the way you've planned for IIT/ AIEEE.

IITs, followed by NITs and IIITs are definitely the top colleges for B.Tech (engineering). These colleges are cost-effective as well. However, getting through to these colleges isn't easy. Further, they provide limited seats.
Due to this, many students who couldn't get through to IITs/ NITs opt for private colleges. If you're interested in private colleges, there are hundreds of private colleges in India which provide quality education and placements.
I hope this helps.
