IAS is the short form of Indian Administrative Service. It is one of the prestigious services among the 24 services like IPS, IFS etc for the which the UPSC conduct Civil Services Examination (CSE) for selecting the candidates. An officer selected into the Indian Administrative Service gets exposure in very diverse roles like the collector, commissioner, head of public sector units, chief secretary, cabinet secretary etc. Not only the experience and challenges but also the scope of making positive changes in the life of millions in India makes IAS a unique career choice.
How to become an IAS officer?
Even though the exam to be undertaken is popularly known as IAS exam, it is officially called UPSC Civil Services Exam. The UPSC CSE consists of 3 stages Prelims, Mains, and Interview. Getting into Indian Administrative Service is not easy considering the competition involved.
UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) is the government agency responsible for selecting the right candidates for this service. Every year only around 1000 candidates are selected for all the 24 services combined. The number of candidates who applied for UPSC Civil Service Exam was about 9 lakh in 2015, out of which around 4.5 lakh candidates appeared on the exam day.

There are many career opportunities for BA Economics graduates. First of all BA Economics graduates are eligible for all government jobs in central and state government where eligibility criteria is graduation degree. You can evaluate Civil Services, PSC in state, SSC etc. Indian Economic Services is one of the coveted jobs for Economics graduate. Reserve Bank of India also hires Economics graduates. Lot of PSUs and public sector banks hires economics graduate for both officer and clerical roles. Private sector also offers jobs for economic graduates in the fields like private banks, MNCs, BPOs, KPOs, newspapers and magazine. Economics graduates are also hired as research assistant by consulting firms. Lot of trade bodies and trading organisations hire economics grads. Economics grads can also join Defence forces and paramilitary forces as commissioned officer. With PG and doctorate in economic students have opportunities for higher roles. PhD degree holders in economics have opportunities to teach and consult.

The next step after clearing the CDS examination is to prepare for SSB (Service Selection Board). The Ministry of Defense undertakes the SSB Interview to evaluate prospective candidates for recruitment in the Army, Navy and Air Force.
The benchmarks on which the candidates are assessed include intelligence, personality, compatibility, and potential. Hence, mental preparation holds prominence over physical preparation, although physical fitness will be an added advantage.
The five-day personality and intelligence test schedule is as under:
Day 1: Basic Intelligence Test
Day 2: Psychological Test
Day 3 & Day 4: The Group Testing Officers (GTO) Activities
Day 5: Conference
A personal interview (PI) can be taken on any day between second to fourth days.
