You have to first appear for CAT and then apply with the score card when the admission process starts in the college. Minimum qualifying marks in graduation are 50% for the general.

ISM is ranked 2nd in Asia for Earth Sciences and placements are very high paying and all major petroleum companies visit the campus, so in my opinion petroleum engineering.

IIT, Dhanbad is one of the peaceful campus with lot of greenery around. Campus provides us with all opportunities in the field of sports, music as well as technology. Campus is secured as well as anti-ragging campus. Dhanbad has many tourist places like Maithon dam, Parasnath, etc. around it.

Are you especially preparing for ISM only? In my opinion, you should prepare for CAT and then select the college according to your percentile in CAT. For CAT preparation, TIME and IMS are the best. All the best!

The two options you gave, I would advise you to go with electrical engineering at IIT(ISM) Dhanbad. It is because your branch matters and certainly electrical is much better than geophysical and electrical is core branch too.
Electrical engineering students at IIT(ISM), Dhanbad has got decent placements in past few years. Since we got the IIT tag last year only, the number of companies visiting the campus is bound to increase from here on. As you might know that petroleum engineering is a field of engineering concerned with the activities related to the production of hydrocarbons, which can be either crude oil or natural gas. Exploration and production are deemed to fall within the upstream sector of the oil and gas industry. Why I am telling this is because this field is entirely different from other branches. You will have to study hard differently to score good grades and of course as your goal is fixed this field might be good for you. For mechanical engineering, the rank range is 3100 to 5500. For electrical engineering, rank range is around 4700 to 6100.
