Yes, appearing for CLAT (Common Law Admission Test) is necessary for admission to most National Law Universities (NLUs) in India for undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) law programs. However, some other law colleges may have their own entrance exams or may admit students based on different criteria, such as marks obtained in the qualifying examination (like the 12th grade for UG programs). Therefore, it's essential to check the specific admission requirements of the law colleges you are interested in, as not all colleges require CLAT scores.

Candidates who want to apply to the NLSIU for BA LLB (Hons) programe must take the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). However, for admissions into its three-year LLB course, Master's Programme in Public Policy, PhD (Law), and PhD (Interdisciplinary) programmes candidates have to appear for NLSAT. Hence, joining NLSIU Bangalore without CLAT is impossible. Therefore students are adviced to began preparing for the exam after CLAT Exam Dates are announced.
