The NMIMS (Deemed to be University) has introduced the M.Sc programme in biological sciences from August 2012. The salient feature of this programme is the emphasis being laid on the overall development of laboratory skills of a student coupled with an expansion of his/her knowledge base through an interdisciplinary course work comprising lectures and practicals in the first year of the course and subsequently fine tuning these skills in a particular area of specialization. While the student will have ample opportunity to acquire hands-on training on modern, sophisticated instruments/equipment, he/she will also be able to benefit from the expertise of one or more faculty, wherever needed. A total of 20 seats are available for the M.Sc programme in Bbological sciences.

The route to M.Sc. Microbiology course is through entrance exam. The entrance tests for this course are IISc Entrance Exam, Goa University Microbiology Entrance Exam, Guru Nanak Dev University M.Sc. Microbiology Entrance Exam, Osmania University Microbiology Entrance Exam and Lovely Professional University Microbiology Entrance Exam. Universities accept the scores of these tests for selection of candidates. A merit list is prepared on the basis of scores in aforementioned tests. Some institutes such as St. Xaviers College, Mumbai take admissions purely on the basis of merit list prepared in accordance to the score in microbiology at Bachelor level.
