According to the available data, National Institute of Design, Assam and NID Kurukshetra are both autonomous public design universities in India. NID is considered one of the premier institutes in design, founded in 1961, with extension campuses in Gandhinagar and Bengaluru. The other NIDs are located in the cities of Kurukshetra, Vijayawada, Jorhat, and Bhopal.
