Only CAT and GMAT is accepted. I would suggest you to attempt GMAT. It can be taken any time of the year. Plus the fee difference between NITK is so huge that spending an additional 12,000 INR for GMAT to get in NITK should not be a problem.

NIT Surathkal is one of the top institute. You need to get above 300 marks in JEE Mains to get a seat for CSE.

Experience in hand gives an edge over the other competitors, so one should try to gain some experience and then apply for good B-schools. IFMR, Great Lakes and GIM are good choices.

For the current year, it is unpredictable, but yes, till last year one of my friends got mining in the last phase, being a general candidate. So, considering the current methodology you may need to score above 220-240 to get NIT-K for general.
