NIT uses both All India as well category wise rank.
Here is a blog by Shiksha which gives you information about opening and closing rank of NITs. Kindly go through it. Hope this will resolve your query.

NIT Trichy is the top most NIT, so I suggest you to go for mechanical at NIT Trichy. If you are getting admission in top 3 NITs, then I suggest you to go for CSE.
