There have been cases where a genius makes it through with going for coaching but I would say it is mandatory for a normal student.
A coaching class is trained to study the exam characteristics and have professional who can take you through the process is a well guided way. The candidates will compete for 2000 seats in degree courses offered by Birla Institute of Technology and Science at Pilani, Hyderabad and Goa. For admissions into NITs you need JEE Paper 1 Marks.

NITs consider both JEE mains and 12th board marks for admission. So a good combination of both of them are required. It also depend upon which NIT and which branch in it you want. A combination of above 200 in JEE with 90+% in boads will get you most of good branches in good NITs.
