The NET exam does not accept candidates who have finished their PGDCA programme from PRSU or any other institution. Before applying for the National Eligibility Test (NET) candidates need to hold a master's degree in M.Sc., MA and M.Com and equivalent fields and achieve at least 55% marks with 50% being the minimum for candidates from reserved categories. The Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Applications (PGDCA) functions as a Diploma whereas it does not fulfill the criteria for holding a master's degree. To take the NET examination candidates need to hold MCA or equivalent degree in any field of study.

However, when a candidate applies determines the cycle in which they will appear for the NIELIT exam. The exam is conducted in two cycle, i.e. January and July. The last date to apply for the January session typically falls in October of the previous year. The last date to apply for the July session is expected to fall in March/April.
