Though most colleges do not require a maths background for admission into this course. One can still say that mathematics is used in the practical applications of scientific principles. One can require basic mathematical operations and calculations. Also, financial planning, budgeting, and resource management all require math skills for calculation of interest rates, depreciation and profit margins.

Hi.

Yes, some math is needed for Genetics — but you do not need to be a math expert.

Genetics & Math: What's Actually Required?

At school / basic undergraduate level

  • Very basic math only

    • Ratios and percentages

Undergraduate Genetics / Life Sciences

You'll encounter:

  • Probability & statistics (inheritance patterns, population genetics)

  • Graphs and data interpretation

  • Basic algebra

No advanced calculus in most programs
Many courses teach the required math alongside biology

Advanced Genetics (Master's

Yes you can work as a data scientist after pursuing a course in Bioinformatics. Besides the core skills used by a data scientist, one thing to adapt to is the domain-specific terminology, concepts and certain processes exclusive to biological data.

The catch is - you'll still be dealing with data. You'll be studying the data and exemplifying findings just as you would in any other field. Biological data might seem comparatively sensitive and complex.
