Given its large range of course offerings, strong infrastructure, and widespread recognition, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is frequently regarded as a pioneer in distant education in India. It is renowned for its knowledgeable teachers and extensive study resources and offers a broad variety of undergraduate and graduate degrees. Pt. Sundarlal Sharma (Open) University, in contrast, could not have the same resources or reputation although also providing distant study. Since IGNOU has a wider network of regional centers and student support services, more people who are looking for high-quality distant education in India choose it.

In general, Pt. Sundarlal Sharma (Open) University—which is situated in Chhattisgarh, India—is categorized as a Tier 2 university. This categorization results from its emphasis on remote learning and its 2005 founding year. Even while the university provides a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs, it might not be as well-known or highly ranked as Tier 1 universities, which are usually well-established academic institutions with a strong track record and significant research output. But Pt. Sundarlal Sharma University is essential to provide accessible education, especially to individuals who are looking for flexible learning options or non-traditional learners.
