The answer to this question will differ from one person to another. The difficulty level of the exam depends a lot on the preparation of the students. For example, if you have prepared really well for the exam and you were able to attempt most of the questions comfortably, the entrance exam was very easy for you. There are many colleges and universities in India that do offer admission to BTech Mechanical Engineering considering the Class 12 board exam marks of the students. While several private colleges and universities also offer admission to students on the basis of their Class 12 marks, most of the top Mechanical Engineering colleges in India admit students on the basis of valid entrance test scores.
The NITs and the IITs need valid JEE Main and JEE Advanced scores respectively, for providing admission to students to the BTech Mechanical Engineering course. You can start by going through the eligibility criteria for the BTech Mechanical Engg. course at the colleges you're targeting. Usually, it falls between 50 to 60% marks in Class 12 in the PCM background. This may vary from one college to another, as for the IITs, you will have to score at least 75% in Class 12 board exams.
Next step in to appear for the entrance exam. If the college offers merit-based admissions, that is well and good. Otherwise, you need to work hard and get good marks in the entrance test. Further, you should fill out the application forms of the colleges before the last date.
