For Gate CSE you must have a Bachelor degree in CSE and related field.
So you are not eligible for GATE CSE as a mechanical student.

Yes, you can apply for it. To be eligible, you should have completed your 10+2 education with physics and mathematics as compulsory subjects, along with Chemistry, Computer Science, Electronics, Information technology, Biology, Informatics Practices, or Biotechnology, achieving at least 45% marks ( 40% for reserved categories) in these subjects combined.
