Since most of the top colleges, like the IITs and the NITs, require valid entrance test scores, it is better if you work hard and give the entrance exam as well to keep both the options, merit and entrance, for admission open. 

The criteria for BTech Mechanical Engineering is both Class 12 merit and entrance scores. Some colleges admit students taking into account their Class 12 board exam marks and often take extra rounds like the PI or GD for testing the general knowledge and technical aptitude of the students.
