The first step in learning how to become a fitness instructor is to prepare for the certification exam. This can take anywhere between 3 to 12 months depending on your base knowledge and amount of time you have to study. Most gyms will not hire you as a fitness instructor unless you have a nationally recognized personal training certification.
NASM, ACE, ACSM, CSCS, ISSA and other national personal training organizations all have their own study materials available for purchase directly from their websites. This is a quick and convenient way to get started towards success. These sites also offer further preparation and exclusive study guides.
If you are on a budget it can be tempting to purchase the study materials at lower prices from online bookstores. When you are ready to take the exam, follow the specific directions given on the certifying organization's website for testing locations. Make sure you are prepared! If you fail, there is a waiting period (varies, approximately 15 days) before you can take the test again. Be sure to keep your books and study materials as you will need them every three years for recertification.

If you want to get paid while working out, you'll enjoy getting a certification in Zumba. Keep in mind that teaching Zumba's "dance party" workout requires energy, enthusiasm and a little sexiness - it's definitely not a workout for the faint of heart.
New instructors have to start with Zumba Basic or Zumba Gold before expanding their horizons. Zumba Basic teaches basic steps for merengue, salsa, cumbia and reggaeton and teaches you to build routines from these steps. Zumba Basic 2 adds four additional steps to your repertoire: belly dance, flamenco, tango and samba. These steps allow you to design more advanced routines. Zumba Gold is designed to meet the needs of a deconditioned participant or an active older adult. In addition to teaching physiological differences in these populations, Zumba Gold includes instruction on a chair workout.
The Zumba Academy for instructors has branched out from the basic Zumba certification to specialty certifications. Zumba Toning incorporates weighted maraca sticks to facilitate additional strength training. Zumba Aqua takes Zumba into the pool, teaching techniques that allow you to transfer Zumba steps into an effective water routine. Zumbatomic is designed for children ages 4 to 12. This workout teaches children to get active in a way that meets their needs and psychological profile.
Certification requires a fee for educational materials and instructional seminars. Fees range from $225 to $285, depending on how early you sign up for the program. Zumba is taught in over 60,000 facilities in 105 countries. Getting certified to teach Zumba doesn't guarantee you a teaching position. And even though positions are in high demand, many gyms require a tryout before they will hire you. Make sure you know your stuff and that you're an enthusiastic instructor.

It depends on your location, years of experience and education/training. Working for a fitness facility you can expect to make between 25-40 an hour. If you are a contractor you can expect to pay the gym 25-50% of what you charge a client. Working independently many charge $60 +/-. You can charge more if you are traveling to your clients home due to gas money and time. As you become more experienced you can charge upwards to $100 a session with top athletic/celebrity trainer charging up to $200. If you are teaching group classes typically clients will pay 10-25 per class depending on what you are teaching and the factors I mentioned above. There are a lot of variables as you can see. Do some research in to what instructors are charging in your area and look into specialty areas that interest you.

Some of the best instructor certification are :-
1. CSCS
The Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist - CSCS - offered by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (nsca-lift.org) is one of the most recognized personal trainer certifications in the fitness industry. It is also one of the most difficult certifications to earn and requires a 4-year college degree. The CSCS is commonly earned by strength coaches or personal trainers working with athletes.
2. ACE
The American Council on Exercise offers various health and fitness certifications and their general personal trainer certification is considered one of the best. ACE offers a 2-day workshop to help you study and prepare for the certification examination. You must recertify every two years to remain ACE personal trainer certified.
3. NASM
Since 1987, the National Academy of Sports Medicine has been a leader in the sports and fitness industry. To become an NASM certified personal trainer, you must be at least 18-years old, CPR certified and successfully pass a two hour examination with 120 questions. You must recertify every two years and can add various specialty certifications based on your clientele.
4. ACSM
The American College of Sports Medicine (acsm.org) was created in 1954 and offers one of the top personal trainer certifications. The accredited certification program requires a high school diploma and CPR certification to take the 125 to 150 question examination. After earning the certification, you must recertify every three years.
5. NSCA-CPT
The National Strength and Conditioning Association (nsca-lift.org) started offering the Certified Personal Trainer - NSCA-CPT - certification in 1993 and is considered one of the most challenging examinations. The prerequisites for taking the NSCA-CPT test include at least 18-years old and CPR certified allowing college students to work as a certified personal trainer as they study health and fitness.
Other certifications are AFPA / NFPT / NESTA / IFPA and Cooper Institute.
