Aspirants have to apply for GATE and on the institute's website for M.Tech at IIT Patna. The application fees for M.Tech is INR 1,000 and INR 500 for female (INR 500 for SC/ ST/ PwD category). For sponsored, self-financed and part-time category, application fees is INR 1,000.

Candidates must pass master's degree in relevant stream wit at least 6.5 CGPA or 60% aggregate to apply for PhD programme at IIT Patna. The upper age limit is 28 years to apply for PhD. There is relaxation up to 5 years for candidates belonging to SC, ST, OBC, Women and PwD category.

IIT Patna conducts written test for admission in M.Tech under sponsored and self-financed category. It also conducts a written test for PhD programme. Aspirants can also get admission in PhD via scores in UGC-NET, CSIR-NET, GATE, etc. Selected candidates also need to pass a PI round conducted by the institute.

Candidates seeking admission to the NIT Patna must first appear for the entrance examinations which is JEE Mains for BTech, GATE for M.Tech and NIMCET for MCA. Then the cutoffs are declared and NIT Patna is allotted to candidates based on their rank and preference marked by them during application process. Shortlisted candidates have an option to either accept the seat or opt for upgradation. Selected candidates must then appear for the document verification process and pay the admission fees.
