Although there is some competition to get into University College Dublin (UCD), the programme and your academic background will determine how challenging it is. Some programs are more competitive than others, especially in subjects like business, computer science, and medicine, because UCD is one of Ireland's best institutions and draws a varied group of international students. The number of backlogs accepted for a master's in Ireland depends entirely on the concerned university. Some universities may even accept 5 backlogs while some may not accept even 1 backlog. Hence, it is better to discuss with your university counsellor if you have any backlog.
On the other hand, it must be noted that to study anywhere in the world, you must not have any active backlogs at the time of the application process as no university abroad accepts students with active backlog (s).

The backlogs can be counted by the following ways for the universities in Ireland:
- 1 Subject = 1 Backlog: Some universities in Ireland follow this manner of counting the backlogs. This means that irrespective of the number of attempts taken to pass a subject, a failed subject will be counted as only one backlog.
- Number of Re-attempts = Backlogs: Some universities in Ireland count backlogs by the number of re- attempts taken to pass the subject. This means if a student took 5 attempts to pass a certain exam (say Chemistry) then, the number of his backlogs is 4 (Total attempts - 1 original attempt = 5-1).
