The Compartment exams are held to provide opportunity to the students who appeared in their board exams but failed in one or more subjects.

If a candidate could not pass any subject, he/she can appear for the compartment exam, provided that:

  1. He/She must have appeared for all the subjects in the concerned year for the Board exam.
  2. He/She must have secured less than 33% marks in the concerned subject.

Therefore, if a student fails in English with less than 33% marks in class 12th, he/she is eligible to appear for the compartment exam to be held in the same year.

The Central Board of Secondary Examination allows a student to reappear in any exam held by it, if the student wish to improve his/her performance or if a student fails in an exam. CBSE allows students to give their exams again by applying for the CBSE Improvement exam.

The student who apply for such improvement exam needs to fill out the exam form from the official website of CBSE and pay the prescribed fees and then appear for the exam as a private candidate. However, a student will have to wait until the CBSE Board exams are held again next year.
