International students whose first language is not English must submit the proof of English language proficiency. The University of York accepts the following test are accepted for admission in undergraduate and graduate programs:

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (Academic and Online)
  • IELTS One Skill Retake
  • PTE Academic
  • TOEFL IBT
  • Duolingo (except for Hull York Medical School courses)

English Language Proficiency Waiver Policy

The English Language Proficiency exam requirement can be waived if international students meet one of the following criteria:

  • If having a score of 650 or higher on the SAT Evidenced-Based Reading and Writing section
  • If having a score of 29 or higher on an ACT
  • If attend school in the US (excluding US territories) for six or more years and have not been enrolled in an English as a Second Language programme for a minimum of six years.
  • Students enrolled in English courses in the IB, AP, or A-Level curricul
