Indira Gandhi National Open University (popularly known as IGNOU or Indira Gandhi Open University), established in 1985, is considered one of the prominent names for distance/ part-time education in India. IGNOU University began by offering two programmes in 1987, with a strength of approximately 4,500 students. Today, it serves more than 4 million students in India and abroad through its 21 schools, a network of 56 regional centres, and 29 overseas partner institutions. IGNOU History

Some of the historical facts of IGNOU are listed below:

The Ministry of Education and Social Welfare, in collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the UGC, and the Indian National Commission for Cooperation, organised a seminar on ‘Open University’ with UNESCO.
Upon the recommendation of the seminar, the Government of India decided to establish an open university on an experimental basis.
In 1974, an eight-member working group was formed, headed by G Parthasarathy, the then Vice-Chancellor of JNU, to monitor the establishment of the open university.
Under the Working Group Report 1974, the recommendation to establish a national open university by an act of Parliament was proposed.
The report also suggested various measures to be followed while formulating the instructional and management processes of the open university, which included: admission procedures, preparation of reading materials, setting up of study centres, live contact with teachers, etc.
This was followed by the release of a draft bill by the Union Government of India for the establishment of a national open university. However, due to some unforeseeable circumstances, the entire process was delayed.
In 1985, the Ministry of Education, Government of India, again formed a committee to prepare a plan of action for the establishment of the open university. Based on the report released by the committee, the Union Government passed a bill in Parliament, and on September 20, 1985, IGNOU came into existence.
Named after the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the university held its first convocation in 1989 and awarded degrees to more than 1000 students.
IGNOU received full recognition from the UGC in 1992, and all the degrees awarded by the university started being recognised as equivalent to the degrees offered by other regular universities in India.
Indira Gandhi National Open University started its virtual campus in 1999, by offering its first-ever online course in Computer and Information Sciences.
Today, IGNOU stands as the world’s largest university and serves more than 4 million students in India and abroad.

Candidates must be pass outs of any bachelor’s degree and/or in the master’s degree in Science/ Social Science/ Commerce/ Humanities with at least 50% aggregate or have a bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Technology with a specialisation in Science and Mathematics with a minimum of 55% aggregate. In the field of Education, IGNOU offers a B.Ed programme to students who've completed their bachelor's degree in any field. However, for 2023 admission, OPENMAT was not conducted for the January and July sessions. Admission is now being granted on a merit-basis. Candidates who are selected for admission need to confirm their seat by paying the course fee. Here are few things that students will recieve after taking admission in IGNOU:

Once a students get admission into IGNOU, he or she will recieve the enrollment number and ID for future login to the samarth portal of the university.
Based on the choice made by the candidate while filling the application form, he or she will then recieve the study material. Soft copy is available on the official website of the university.
Registered students also recieve a mail from the regional or study centre for counselling. It is an induction ceremony where the course is introduced to the students.
