Punctuation is crucial in compound sentences:

1. Use a comma before the coordinating conjunction if both clauses are independent.

Example: I was late, but I still made it to class.

2. Use a semicolon when you don't use a conjunction.

Example: She loves books; he prefers movies.

3. Use a semicolon + conjunctive adverb + comma when using adverbs like however, therefore, moreover, nevertheless.

Example: He was tired; however, he continued working.

Avoid comma splices, which occur when two independent clauses are joined with only a comma.

Coordinating conjunctions are words that connect words, phrases or clauses of equal importance. The most common coordinating conjunctions are remembered by the acronym FANBOYS:

F: For (cause)

A: And (addition)

N: Nor (negative addition)

B: But (contrast)

O: Or (choice)

Y: Yet (contrast, similar to 'but')

S: So (result)

Example: I wanted to study, but I was too tired.

If you want to do MA in English from a regular college but can't attend classes daily, you can go for distance or open universities. Some good options are IGNOU, Delhi University SOL, Bharathiar University, and Annamalai University. They offer valid UGC-approved MA degrees, and the fees are affordable too. You can study at your own pace, and the degree is accepted just like regular ones. Perfect for working people or those who can't attend regular classes.
