No, synonyms are words that have a similar meaning, whereas antonyms are used for words with the opposite meaning. Hence, no, synonyms and antonyms are not the same. There are three main types of synonyms: Absolute or Exact, Near, and Partial. Further, there are cases when synonyms might carry a similar meaning to only a certain extent. In such cases, one can't use the words interchangeably without changing the meaning of the sentence. Certain words sound more formal as compared to their counterparts.

Example: Father is more formal than Dad.
