No, questions based on Engineering Mathematics are not asked in every GATE paper.
Question papers with the codes AR, CY, EY, GG, M.A. PH, and XL do not consist of Engineering Mathematics questions. Engineering Mathematics and General Aptitude are the compulsory sections, which include 28% weightage combined in each in total marks in GATE papers with codes AE, AG, BT, CE, CH, CS EC, EE, IN ME, MN, MT, PE, PI TF, and XE.

There are three types of questions asked in the GATE exam namely Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs), Multiple Select Questions (MSQs), Numerical Answer Type Questions (NAT). Every question will be of either 1 or 2 marks. 2 marks question generally more difficult and lengthier. Candidates must attempt mock test and Pervious year GATE question papers to get an idea that which question will be awarded with 2 marks.

Candidates need not attempt all questions in GATE exam. Candidates will be awarded 0 marks for not attempted questions. For wrong answers there will be a negative marking of one third in MCQs.

There are 65 questions asked for 100 marks in GATE exam. General aptitude questions are asked for 15 marks, Engineering mathematics in some paper codes for 13 marks and the rest 72 marks from the chosen subject.
In some paper codes engineering mathematics is excluded. In such case, the general aptitude section carries 15 mark and the subject-specific section carries 85 marks.

IIT Guwahati will release the GATE 2026 exam pattern on the official website. The GATE 2025 exam had a total of 65 questions carrying 100 marks out of which 10 questions carrying a total of 15 marks were general aptitude. In the papers bearing the codes AE, AG, BT, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, IN, ME, MN, MT, PI, TF and XE, the General Aptitude and Engineering Mathematics will carry around 28% of the total marks and the remaining 72% of the total marks is devoted to the subject of the paper. No, in fact a Candidate should note that if he or she is not sure about an answer to a question, they should surely try to avoid that question since there is a negative marking in the GATE examination. It is not mandatory to solve all the 65 questions and one must be totally sure while answering a question and not rely on the luck of guessing.
